The Hooglandskerk in Leiden is a church with an interesting gothic architecture, constructed in stages over a couple of hundred years. The church holds a monument to Pieter van der Werff, a burgomaster who is considered a hero after he offered up his own body to be eaten during the 8 month long Spanish siege, and subsequent massacre, of Haarlem. The offer was declined, but he served as an inspiration to the town’s tired citizens.
