The ’Fort Bij Kudelstaart’, or Fort at Kudelstart is one of a group of Forts constructed as part of the Defence Line project. The fort was intended to house a large number of soldiers, who would defend important areas of the town, such as rail stations, and farms, in the event of an invasion. It was also intended as a ’safe retreat’ for key officials. When the Defence Line project became obsolete after advances in warfare related technology, the Fort fell out of use, and became a Unesco protected monument.
