The Nieuwe Toren in Kampen is a seventeenth century tower, located just across the street from the Oude Raadhuis. It is the centre of attention once a year, when the ’Kampen Cow’ is hoisted to the top. This is part of a long standing tradition, started, apparently, when a local farmer noticed grass growing at the top of the tower and requested permission to graze his cattle up there. The tradition used to use a real cow, but in recent years a plastic model has been used instead.
