The De Hoop Windmill in the town of Lunteren is one of the most important monuments in the town, attracting almost as many visitors as the spectacular Old Church. The mill was built in 1855. The name ’ De Hoop’ means ’The Hope’. The miller, A. J. Ross, had high expectations for the mill, but did not stay long enough to see his dreams develop, as shortly after the mill was completed he emigrated to America. The mill underwent extensive restoration work in 1973, and is now classed as a national monument. Today, the mill is in a poor condition, and is temporarily closed pending further repair work.
