The University Museum in Groningen is just north west of Grote Markt. It is a small museum which gives visitors a taste of the history of the university. It has a variety of academic related exhibits, including scientific equipment and pictures of past students from the late 1800s, a portrait gallery, and a variety of ethnic items. The city has a long academic history, but the university was not founded until 1614, and the museum traces the history of the city as a centre of education.
