The Egelantier was built between 1871 and 1873 in a Neo-Classical style. It eventually became the main building of the Elisabeth Gasthuis hospital, although much of the old building’s character was preserved. A new entrance way for the Egelantier was designed by architect Wiek Röling in 1979, when the former hospital building became home to many cultural organisations. Some of the other gates date back to the late 16th century, when the original hospital building was constructed.
