The Damsluis in de Slotertocht is one of several locks in the Defence Line of Amsterdam. The Defence Line is made up of several locks, pumps, canals, and bridges. The line was built over a period of 40 years – construction began in 1880, when it was decided that the existing fortifications were not suitable for defending against an attack by modern artillery. The remaining parts of the line are UNESCO protected monuments.
