Schokland started life as a peninsula, but over the course of hundreds of years became an island. It was abandoned in 1859 because of flooding from the encroaching sea. The land was reclaimed in the 1940s after the draining of the Zuider Zee. Schokland is an interesting historical site, with evidence of human habitation going back to prehistoric times. The ruins at the site symbolise the heroic struggle of the people of the Netherlands against the encroachment of the waters.
