The Schaats Museum in Hindeloopen holds a collection of ice-skating mementoes relating to the great Frisian ice-skating race ’De Friese Elfstedentocht’ – a marathon event which dates back to 1890, when Pim Muller, a local sports journalist, skated his way around the 11 official towns of the province of Friesland just to see if it was possible. The museum also has a collection of beautifully painted Hindeloopen-ware on sale in its small shop.
