The Raadhuis, or Town Hall in Harlingen is a grand 18th century structure. It was built in 1736 by Hendrik Norel, and features a fine Council Chamber and an interesting tower decorated with a figure of the Archangel Michael, the patron saint of the town. The design was intended as a reminder of the importance of Harlingen as a trading port during the 18th century. The town hall was carefully restored in 1956, and retains most of its grand, elegant appearance.
