The Peace Palace was constructed between 1907 and 1913, with the aid of donations made by Andrew Carnegie. The building houses an extensive library, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the International Court of Justice, and the International Law Academy. The building is surrounded by a large courtyard and gardens, designed by landscape artist Thomas Mawson. The estate is open to the public, but only as part of a guided tour, which must be booked in advance.
