The Museum Martena in Franeker is located in the old Martenahuis, which was constructed in 1498. The museum displays a number of pieces relating to the history of the town, and the former university with its varied alumni. The exhibits include a number of paintings by the university professors. The museum also has a garden, which holds several rare species of plants. A number of contemporary expositions are held at the museum throughout the year.
