The Lauwersmeer National Park is located on the Groningen-Frisian border. It was founded in 1969 after the construction of the dam between the Wadden Sea and the old lake. The area has developed into a very scenic place, which provides home to many species of birds, as well as fish and rare flora. The park offers many opportunities for fishing, windsurfing, and cycling, as well as just wandering around and enjoying the scenery created as a result of the land reclamation.
