The Kazematten in Elburg is an old underground artillery casement. It was once part of the sixteenth century defensive works, and is now open to visitors during the summer. The emplacement is very small and poorly ventilated. The Dutch used to refer to them as ’Moortkujil’ – which translated means ’Pits of Murder’ – if you visit one, you will see why this name fits. After leaving the Kazematten, you can walk around the old ramparts to see the rest of the town defences.
