The Inlaatduiker aan de Waarderpolder was constructed in 1891, and is a part of a defence works project which took more than 30 years to build. It is a UNESCO protected monument, and a testament to the engineering skill and ingenuity of the Dutch peoples. The defence line protected Amsterdam from invasion, and also served to keep important areas of land dry in times of peace. The defence works were also available as a secure place for important officials and officers to retreat to in times of war.
