The Inlaatduiker aan de Veerpolder is a UNESCO protected monument. It was constructed in 1891 as part of a defence works programme which included a network of drainage pumps, forts, and canals that would drain water from areas around Amsterdam in times of peace, and could quickly flood those areas to make them impassable in the event of war breaking out.
