The Access-Bridge on the Ijweg and Achterkanaal is a part of the defence line which has served the country since the late 19th century. The defence line is an intricate system of canals and locks which protect the country from flooding in peace-time, and will serve to flood certain access-ways in times of war – preventing troops from using them. The defence lines are a testament to the hydraulic engineering skills of the country, and are UNESCO protected monuments.
