The Huis ten Berghe Castle, or “House at the Hill” in Hillegersberg was built during the first half of the 13th century for Count Willem II. The castle was burned down in 1426 by the troops of Jacoba van Beieren, and the ruins lay forgotten for almost four hundred years. In 1832 a grave yard was laid out around the ruins of the castle, and in 1940 the ruins were consolidated. A few years later some limited excavation work was began. Today, the floor of the keep is completely covered with tomb stones.
