The ’Line Rampart For Railway’, or ’Insnijding in Liniewal voor Spoorweg bij Hoofddorp’, was constructed in the late 19th century, as part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. The Defence Line was a large military project intended to defend the capital city by using a network of dikes and drainage pumps to quickly flood strategic areas during times of war. The railway ramparts were created to ensure that trains could still pass through those areas when the polders were flooded.
