The original Heeswijk Castle is thought to have been built in the 11th century, but the first written record of the castle dates back to 1156, when it was owned by Count Almericus. In 1834 the castle was bought by Alberic van den Bogaerd. Alberic died in 1895, and the orders in his will said that the castle must remain unoccupied until his youngest heir reached his 80th birthday. The family persuaded the courts to allow them to sell some of the castle’s museum collection, but the castle did remain unoccupied until 1964, when the descendants of Alberic van den Bogaerd moved back in to the bailey and restored began restoration work. The castle is open to the public.
