The ’Damsluis in de Fuikvaart’ is located near the Ringvaart in Haarlem. It is part of the defence line which was built between 1880 and 1920. The line surrounds Amsterdam, and consists of a number of pumps, dams, and forts. The purpose of the line was to keep certain strategic areas dry by directing water away from them during times of peace, then, when an invasion occurred, to quickly flood the same areas, making it difficult for vehicles and infantry to pass through.
