The Groninger Museum opened in 1994, and is a prominent landmark in the city due to its unusual and eye-catching appearance. The building was designed by an Italian architect named Alessandron Mendini, with several designers, including Philippe Starck and Michele de Lucchi influencing the varied styles of the pavilions. The interior of the musuem is as unusual as the exterior, with colourful mosaics on the walls. Each pavilion holds a different exhibit, with themes ranging from local archaeology to Eastern ceramics, decorative arts, and Expressionist paintings.
