The Egmondse Abbey was founded at the start of the 10th century by Earl Dirk I. At first, women were allowed in the abbey, but in 950 the women were moved to Bennebroek and the abbey was reserved for monks only. The monks made candles and pottery which to sell to travellers – this was their main source of income. Today, the same items are still hand crafted in a traditional manner, and visitors can learn how the items are made, and also learn about the history and significance of the Abbey.
