Egmond Castle, also known as “Slot op den Hoef” is a 13th century castle in the town of Egmond aan den Hoef. The original castle was 27 meters in diameter, and was built for Wouter van Egmond. It had a strong keep on the southern side. This castle remained mostly untouched until the 15th century when Jan III built a harbour on the north eastern side of the castle, and expanded the main building. In 1573 the castle was almost totally destroyed by Willem van Orange, to stop it falling into the hands of Spanish invaders. Today, only the foundations of the castle remain.
