The De Adriaan Windmill is one of the most popular sights in Haarlem. It is a wooden towered windmill, and was built in 1778 on the foundations of an old defensive tower in the centre of the town. It was almost totally destroyed after a fire in 1932, but the residents of Haarlem banded together, and the mill was carefully rebuilt. The mill is open to visitors, and it can be seen in operation on Saturdays, assuming the weather is suitable.
