The Batterij aan de Ijweg is a fort that is a part of the defence line which was used to protect parts of the country from invasion. It was designed as a cheap defensive mechanism, which would flood the polders and make them impassable. The forts were usually left un-manned, but, when needed, could be used quickly to respond to a threat. Most of the forts are no longer in use, but are preserved as national monuments and are open to visitors in the summer months.
