The Assumburg Castle was built in the 15th century. At the time of its construction, the role of castles as a defensive stronghold was coming to the end, and the Assumburg Castle was built more as a show of power and status, than as a defensive structure. The building was sold to Gerrit van Assendelft in 1546, and the Van Assendelft family used it as a stately home until the early 20th century. Today, the Assumburg Castle is used as a youth hostel.
