The Assumburg Castle is a 16th century castle in the town of Heemskerk. The castle was built for the son of the Lord of Assumburg. The castle has a sad story attached to it. The young lord went to study in France, and while he was there he married the daughter of an innkeeper. When he returned to the Netherlands he was ashamed of his wife, so he stayed at the castle while his wife lived in a separate house. His wife began forging coins, and when he learns of this he feels compelled to put his wife and all her servants to death. Today, Assumburg Castle is used as a youth hostel.
