The Waag, or Weigh House in Alkmaar is located on the main square. It was originally constructed as a chapel dedicated to the Holy Ghost, and features an imposing tower. The chapel was converted to a Weigh House, and given its Renaissance-style eastern gable shortly after the town’s much rejoiced victory against the Spanish. The Waag contains the town’s tourist office, or VVV, along with a small museum related to the history of cheese.
