The Vondelpark is commonly referred to as Amsterdam’s ‘Green Lung’. The park was designed in 1865 as a 25-acre area for walking and riding. It expanded over the years to cover 120 acres. The name Vondelpark is in honour of Joost van den Vondel, the ‘Dutch Shakespeare’. Today, the park serves a variety of purposes, including, amongst others an outdoor café, skating rink, a children’s playground, open air theatre, concert site, petting zoo and rose garden.
