The Trippenhuis, on the Kloveniersburwal waterway, is a large mansion decorated with Corinthian plasters and an ornate frieze. The mansion was built for the Trip family, one of the richest families in Amsterdam, in 1662. On the opposite side of the waterway is the Kleine Trippenhuis – one of the narrowest houses in Amsterdam. Legend has it that Mr Trip’s coachman was taken aback by the size of the family mansion, and told Mr Trip he would be happy with an abode no wider than the mansion’s front door, so Mr Trip gave him exactly that.
