The Noordermolen was built in 1589 as a drainage mill for the Great Limmerpolder. The mill was one of several mills used to keep the polder drained of water. In the late 19th century, the number of active drainage mills was reduced to two, the Noordermolen and the Zuidermolen The Zuidermolen was converted to use a steam pump in 1869. The Noordermolen is currently owned by the Hollands Noorderkwartier, and is still used as a drainage mill today.
