The Blauwbrug, or, Blue Bridge, is not actually coloured blue. The name ’Blue Bridge’ comes from the painted wooden bridge that once stood in that location, but the current brick and sandstone bridge is a more recent construction. It was built in anticipation of the World Exposition of 1883, as a symbol of wealth and permanence. The bridge is decorated with sculptures depicting the seafaring history of the city, including portrayals of life at sea, ships, and crowns.
