The Stedelijk Museum was opened in 1895, initially exhibiting a collection of antiques, coins, timepieces and other curiousa. Now the museum hosts a collection of modern art mostly dating after 1945. The most famous painters, such as Mondriaan, Malevich, Picasso, De Kooning and Rietveld are all featured, alongside younger upcoming artists. A number of themed exhibitions run throughout the year, and guided tours of the museum are available in several languages if booked two weeks in advance.
