The Stadsschouwburg is a noteworthly neo-Renaiisance building on the Leidesplein in Amsterdam. It dates back to 1894, and at the time of its construction was almost universally disliked. In fact, for a while the city council witheld the funding required to decorate the exterior, because the building was considered to appear clumsy and vulgar. It was home to the National Ballet and opera until 1986, and now hosts other theatre and dance companies from around the world.
