The Stadhuis en Muziektheater is a large, modern complex which was constructed in the 1980s. It houses the city hall and a large auditorium which runs a programme of ballet, dance, theatre and opera which includes performances by the Netherlands Opera company. Inside the complex are two glass columns, each containing water. One represents the current sea levels in the towns of Vlissingen and Ijmuiden, the other shows the levels reached during the floods of 1953.
