The Stadhuis in Alkmaar is a Renaissance style building which dates back to the early 17th century. The facade was carefully restored in 1966, and the building contains a number of paintings dating from the 16th to the 18th century. The original town hall was constructed in the 13th century, but was destroyed by a fire in 1618, leaving only the tower intact. The new building was constructed on the same site to a design by Hendrick de Keyser. Some of the most interesting rooms to explore are the orange Gallery and the Council Chambers.
