Saint Bavo was born in Belgium, to a Frankish noble family that gave him the name Allowin. He was a wild and selfish youth, and is reputed to have sold servants to local nobles as slaves. He converted to Christianity after hearing a sermon by Saint Amand. Saint Bavo’s church in Aardenburg is one of several churches built in his honour, and is one of the best remaining examples of Scheldt architecture. The site of the church is also a good place to see the remains of the city’s fortifications.
