The Ruinekerk (or, ’ruin church’) in Bergen is aptly named. It is all that remains of a pilgrims’ church which was built on the site of a small chapel after the Miracle of Bergen in 1422. The church is believed to have had a very wide nave, and a single saddle roof. The church was destroyed by protestant troops in 1574 – the tower was completely destroyed, but large sections of the nave and choir remained intact. The choir was rebuilt in 1594, and during the 1950s C.W. Royaards led an extensive restoration programme.
