The Royal Theatre Carré was founded Carré family – a French / German family of riders and circus artists who first came to the Netherlands to perform at the annual Amsterdam Fair in 1863, and received permission to build a fixed circus three years later. The Royal Theatre Carré still sees some circuses performing there, but is usually host to caberet, opera, ballet and musical productions. The Royal Theatre Carré is still one of the most popular theatres in Amsterdam, and shows frequently sell out well before the opening night.
