The Noorderkerk was the last church to have been designed by Hendrik de Keyser before his death in 1621. The entire design is far more stern and dour than anything else that he had ever worked on. The church was designed to a symmetrical Greek-cross pattern, with four arms radiating out from the central steeple. The design meant that the preacher was located at the centre of the church, rather than the front – this was intended as a symbolic break from the Catholicism of the past. Work on the church was completed two years after de Keyser’s death.
