The Kasteel in Breda was the location of the signing of the Compromise of Breda in 1566. When the Spanish took Breda 25 years later, clever Dutch troops managed to sneak into the castle using a Trojan Horse strategy and hiding under peat that was taken on barges to re-supply the troops. They waited until they were towed into the castle and re-captured it. Today, the building serves as a Military Academy – if you wish to tour the grounds, you will need to join a scheduled VVV tour.
