The Hofje Van Brienen, also known as De Star, after the foundation which took over the site in 1841, is located on the Prinsengracht, and is one of the cities prettiest hofjes, or almshouses. It was supposedly built by the merchant Jan Van Brienen in 1804, as an act of gratitude after he escaped from a vault in which he had accidentally been locked inside. The Hofje has a beautiful courtyard and garden area. It offers free entry to the public.
