The Fort bij Heemstede is located on Spaarneweg bij Cruquiusdijk it is a part of the defensive line which was constructed in the late 19th century. The defence line surrounds an area around Amsterdam, and protects the city from invasion by allowing key strategic points to be flooded, making it difficult for both infantry and vehicles to travel around the area. The fort is a UNESCO protected monument, and a reminder of the skill and ingenuity shown by Dutch people, in mastering their environment and using it to their advantage during times of war.
