The Grote Kerk, or Great Church, in Bergen has had a long and difficult history. It is an plain, stern building, which has suffered a lot over the past several hundred years. It has been severely damaged by floods, siege, and World War II bombing. The Grote Kerk is located on the Grote Markt, not far from the Stadhuis, or Town Hall, and is a stark contrast to its cleaner, much more affluent appearing architecture.
