The Fort Waver-Amstel was constructed in 1886 as part of the large ’Defence Line of Amsterdam’ project. The original fort was an a simple earthwork design, and was upgraded to a more defensible earthwork in 1895. A further set of improvements, including a change to concrete buildings to provide defence against artillery strikes, was made in 1911. The Defence Line fell out of use in 1960, and the forts now belong to World Heritage, who have listed the Defence Line as a Unesco protected monument.
