Fort De Kwakel

The Fort De Kwakel is located on the Ringdijk in the town of De Kwakel. A series of forts were constructed in the Netherlands between the years of 1880 and 1920. The forts were designed to house a large number of soldiers, and to complement a water based defence mechanism that would allow certain areas of land to be flooded in the event of an invasion. The forts fell into disuse when bombs and explosives became a bigger part of warfare. Today, the remaining Forts are Unesco protected monuments, and offer an interesting insight into Dutch military history.
