The Hollandsche Schouwburg, or Dutch Theatre, was built in 1892. During the Second World War it was used as a deportation centre for Jews. Thousands of people were sent by train from the Schouwburg to the Westerbork transit camp and from there to concentration camps. The Hollandsche Schouwburg became a war memorial in 1962. The auditorium has been replaced with an open courtyard, and there is a memorial chapel where an eternal flame burns, and an exhibition room covering the persecution of Jews during the war.
