The CoBrA movement was founded by a group of European artists in 1948. Its name is derived from the names of the home cities of those artists – Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam. The artists wanted to break new ground, working spontaneously to create fantastic, expressive imagery. The movement was disbanded in 1951, but in its few years of life, it rejuvenated Dutch art. Their works, including paintings, picture books and sculptures, are on display at the Cobra museum.
