The Agnietenkapel (the Chapel of Holy Agnes) is the only medieval chapel in Amsterdam that is still in good condition.Originally built in 1397, the chapel was reconstructed after a fire in 1470. The Chapel of Holy Agnes is also known as the site where the precursor to the University of Amsterdam was founded in 1632. The chapel was the centre of much of the scientific work done in the 17th century, and is now the University’s history museum. The oldest lecture hall is now a gallery, with portraits of famous scholars available for viewing.
